Capacity Building

MU-JHU Care Ltd has an invaluable niche in Uganda’s healthcare industry. We provide much needed medical research, psychosocial support, education and health care that improves the well being of at-risk communities. The environment in which we operate has become increasingly complex and challenging as research regulations advance.

For us to meet staff competency requirements often stipulated in Clinic Trial contracts it is important to ensure that study staff have undergone the necessary training in preparation for the Clinical Trials.

Some of this training is study-specific regarding areas like documentation, data management and participant consenting. Whereas there is general training that ensures that our site is accredited for specific funding including that from DAIDS.

Scholarships under the D43 Grant

MU-JHU D43 Research Training Programme

MU-JHU Care Ltd, in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), received an NIH Fogarty International Center D43 International Research Training Grant for the grant period 2025-2030.

The programme, Strengthening Capacity of Researchers in Uganda to Conduct HIV Clinical Trials in Unique Populations, supports the development of Ugandan researchers to design, conduct and lead high-quality HIV clinical research.

The programme focuses on research involving populations that require specialised approaches, including:

Pregnant and lactating women
Infants, children and adolescents
Young women and their male partners

Training Opportunities

The D43 programme supports researchers at different stages of their careers through:

Long-Term Training
PhD scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships that support advanced academic and research careers.
Medium-Term Training
Focused academic and practical training to strengthen technical, ethical, regulatory and research skills.
Short-Term Training
Intensive courses and workshops covering areas such as clinical trial design and implementation, research methodology, biostatistics, data management, laboratory science and research site management.

By supporting researchers through advanced training and practical research experience, MU-JHU and its partners are helping strengthen Uganda’s ability to generate evidence and respond to evolving HIV and public health priorities.
