PhD Scholarships

Background

The MU-JHU Research Collaboration (MU-JHU CARE LTD) in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is pleased to announce a call for applications for PhD training in the following fields:

  • Behavioral science
  • Pharmacology
  • Virology/Immunology
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Implementation Science

This program, hosted at Makerere University, aims to strengthen the local capacity of the next generation of Ugandan researchers to take leadership roles in designing and conducting innovative HIV-related clinical trials. The focus is on pregnant and lactating women, children and adolescents and young women and their partners. This training initiative is supported by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health.

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

  • Ugandan from MU-JHU, MakCHS or other Ugandan research organizations
  • Hold a master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized
  • Interested in conducting HIV related research in pregnant or lactating women, children, adolescents or young women and their partners and a commitment to developing a research career and leadership in this field.
  • Have a research topic relevant to this
  • Have a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or organizational
  • Commitment to publish research conducted under this training in a peer-reviewed journal(s).
  • Have potential to handle rigorous academic requirements of the PhD

Application Process

  • Cover letter (max 1page) expressing interest in the program, addressed to the Program Director
  • Personal statement (should address planned career research goals)
  • Bio sketch in NIH format (use the attached blank template for the application) .
  • Research concept related to HIV in the population of interest (max 3 pages).
  • Recommendation letter from faculty/ Supervisor/ Mentor or organizational leadership sent separately to mujhu@mujhu.org, before the application deadline.
