MU-JHU Care Ltd is proud to celebrate the participation of Dr. Flavia Matovu Kiweewa (MBChB, MSc., PhD), Director of Research, at the Inaugural Continental Launch of the Pan-African HIV Clinicians Society (PAHCS), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 30th-31st May 2026.
Hosted in the diplomatic capital of Africa, the two-day meeting brought together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and global health partners from across the continent to formally establish a unified platform to advance HIV care across the continent. The event marked a milestone moment in the history of African-led HIV science and clinical leadership.
Dr. Flavia Matovu Kiweewa was invited as a keynote guest speaker and delivered her address on “Equity at the Centre: Reimagining HIV Prevention for Women and Young People in Africa.” Her presentation challenged the assembled leaders to place the lived realities of women and young people, and the populations most disproportionately affected by HIV across the continent, at the core of prevention policy, clinical practice, and research design.

Drawing on years of frontline research and implementation experience rooted in Uganda, Dr. Flavia called for health systems and funders to move beyond one-size-fits-all HIV prevention approaches, advocating for gender-responsive, age-appropriate, and community-grounded strategies that reflect the diversity of African women’s and young people’s experiences.
She also participated as a panelist in the discussions that followed, contributing MU-JHU’s institutional knowledge and Uganda’s research evidence to the broader continental dialogue.
Beyond her role as a speaker, Dr. Flavia was appointed as a Board Member of the newly established Pan-African HIV Clinicians Society, a recognition of her standing as one of Africa’s foremost HIV prevention scientists, and an opportunity to shape the society’s agenda, governance, and strategic direction from its very founding.

PAHCS was established to strengthen HIV care across Africa through clinical training, research, and pan-continental collaboration. The society’s inaugural board unites clinicians and researchers from 13 countries, marking a bold step toward a unified, African-owned clinical voice on HIV.
Dr. Flavia’s participation reflects MUJHU Care Ltd’s broader mission, not only to generate world-class HIV research from Uganda, but also ensure that Ugandan evidence informs and shapes the continental and global HIV agenda.
“This is exactly the kind of platform that Africa needs,” said Dr. Flavia. “For too long, the voices of frontline African clinicians and researchers have been underrepresented in the rooms where HIV policies are made. PAHCS changes that.”
MU-JHU congratulates Dr. Flavia on this achievement and looks forward to the society’s impact.
