Background

MU-JHU Care Ltd  in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is pleased to announce a call for applications for PhD training in behavioural science, Pharmacology, Virology/immunology, biostatistics and epidemiology at Makerere University.

The program aims to strengthen local capacity of the next generation of Ugandan researchers to take leadership roles in designing and conducting cutting edge HIV related Clinical trials among;

  • pregnant and lactating women,
  • children,
  • adolescents,
  • young women and their partners.

It is supported by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institute of Health.

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

  • Ugandan from MU-JHU, MakCHS or other Ugandan research organizations.
  • Hold a master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university.
  • Enrolment in a PhD program at Makerere University (Mak) is an added advantage but not required.
  • Interested in conducting HIV related clinical trial research in pregnant or lactating women, children, adolescents or young women and their partners and a commitment to developing a career and leadership in this field.
  • Have a research topic relevant to this program.
  • Have a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or organizational leadership.
  • Commitment to publish research conducted under this training in a peer reviewed Journal.
  • Have potential to handle rigorous academic requirements of the PhD program.

Application Process

  • Cover letter (maximum 1 page) expressing interest in the program, addressed to the Program Director.
  • Personal statement (should address planned career research goals).
  • Biosketch in NIH format (use the attached blank template for the application).

NB: A completed biosketch  and sample biosketch have been attached for reference.

  • Research concept related to HIV in the population of interest (maximum 3 pages)
  • Letter of acceptance in the planned degree program.
  • Recommendation letter from faculty advisor or organizational leadership sent separately to mujhu@mujhu.org, before the application deadline.
