In-Depth Short-Term Module: Considerations and Challenges in Conducting Paediatric and Adolescent HIV Clinical Trials

Background

MU-JHU Research Collaboration (MU-JHU CARE Ltd), in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), invites applications for an In-Depth Short-Term Module on the Considerations and Challenges of conducting Paediatric and Adolescent HIV clinical Trials.

The goal of the In-Depth Module is to strengthen the capacity of Ugandan investigators and research teams to conduct clinical trial research, with a particular emphasis on paediatric and adolescent HIV populations.

The module will take place from September to November 2026. During this training, trainees can expect interactive lectures, group practical sessions, case-based discussions, and other learning activities designed to enhance their knowledge and practical skills.

Module Objectives

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

Increase their knowledge and expertise in the unique aspects of conducting paediatric HIV prevention and treatment trials. This will include study design, safety and toxicity considerations, normal laboratory values, and ethical considerations.
Apply the knowledge and insights gained from this module to practical activities related to the design and conduct of paediatric and adolescent HIV clinical trials.

Training Format

Duration: 8 weeks, from September to November 2026
Time commitment: Approximately 3 hours per week (held on one day)
Mode of delivery: Primarily in-person, with the first session conducted face-to-face. Subsequent sessions may be held in a hybrid format.
Learning approaches: Lectures, group practical sessions, case-based discussions, and interactive activities.

Postgraduate students
D43 awardees
Eligible candidates from Ugandan research partner institutions beyond MU-JHU

Please note: Completion of the core course is not a requirement for participation in this module.

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit a written application that includes the following:

Curriculum Vitae/Biosketch
Personal statement describing the specific knowledge and skills the applicant hopes to gain from the training and how these will contribute to their research work.
Time commitment statement confirming availability to participate for at least 3 hours per week throughout the 8-week module.
Letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor or institutional representative, confirming that the applicant will be released from their duties to participate in the training, and explaining how the training is expected to benefit research activities within their organisation.

Benefits of Participation

Participants who successfully complete the training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
No course fee required.
